The Nature Investment Hub is advancing a nature finance agenda for Canada. We are leading a national, inter-disciplinary and inclusive process on what we need to collectively do to grow the value of the domestic nature finance market to 25 billion per year by 2030. This figure represents a fivefold increase in capital allocation to nature from public, private, philanthropic and Indigenous-owned capital pools (hence 5X for Nature).
Through a series of virtual consultative tables, we will focus on financial vehicles with the best chances of liberating capital for nature, while being attuned to the specific market dynamics in Canada.
These conversations will result in an agenda that identifies key data, capacity development, market infrastructure and enabling policy actions that will drive capital allocation to nature through 2030 and beyond.
Our Nature Finance Bootcamp, launching in 2026, will support decision-making and action by elevating literacy on nature finance in Canada. The Nature Finance Bootcamp will equip participants from across sectors with the knowledge, shared language, and tools needed to design and implement innovative financial instruments in support of the conservation, restoration, stewardship and sustainable management of nature.
The Nature Finance Bootcamp is a multi-day intensive, designed to build a shared understanding of the rapidly evolving nature finance landscape in Canada. Through a mix of expert-led discussions, real-world case studies, interactive sessions, and immersive land-based learning experiences, cohorts will gain exposure to the latest trends in nature finance, exchange ideas with practitioners and technical experts, and explore opportunities for collaboration.
This curriculum will be grounded in Canadian market realities and socio-economic needs, while being guided by design principles rooted in transformational change, equity, inclusion and Reconciliation.
The Nature Finance Bootcamp aims to increase the number of investable projects that benefit nature, communities, cultures and the economy today, and for future generations. Subscribe to our newsletter to receive program details as they become available.
Investors take stock of the state of nature investment in Canada in our annual investor surveys. This survey is a first-of-its kind effort to benchmark progress on Canada’s nature finance market.
In 2025, we released the first report based on our 2024 investor survey, which included a range of investor types. Results showed that meaningful nature finance activity is already underway, and the vast majority of investors expect to maintain or increase investment in nature within the next five years. Nature finance is a growth market for Canada. However, investors identify that there is currently a lack of opportunity to allocate more capital in nature in Canada. The message from investors is clear: more investable nature finance opportunities are needed in Canada, and increasing investment relies upon whether attractive opportunities grow at pace.
We now have a benchmark for nature finance in Canada, and future investor surveys will continue to explore where funds are flowing, existing barriers that can be addressed, and perceived opportunities and priorities to accelerate nature investment in Canada. The report is intended to inform those directly investing in nature and those influencing the space, and aims to inspire ways to encourage capital investment into activities that conserve, restore and sustainably manage nature. As part of our ongoing work on natural climate solutions, Nature Investment Hub contributed to a landmark report from the Smart Prosperity Institute and Nature United, Unlocking the Economic Power of Natural Climate Solutions. This report shed light on the untapped economic potential of Natural Climate Solutions in Canada – and makes clear that strategic action along the investment spectrum is needed. This includes seed and matching funds to support capacity building, as well as blended finance to de-risk private investment, all of which are essential to unlock this economic opportunity. We continue to advance natural climate solutions in Canada as part of this initiative. Learn more about our work on the economic power of natural climate solutions.
We are co-leading the Split Nitrogen Application Profit Guarantee Pilot with Farmers for Climate Solutions and the Smart Prosperity Institute. This pilot looks to reduce risks of split nitrogen application for Ontario corn growers, and will include farmers in Ontario who want to improve the efficiency of their nitrogen fertilizer applications.
Investing in Indigenous-led conservation and stewardship is a critical step in addressing the biodiversity and climate crises in Canada. It can also play a pivotal role in fostering economic development in Indigenous communities, supporting cultural revitalization, and empowering Indigenous communities as they make decisions that affect their own governance, resources, and future.
The Hub is committed to promoting nature finance approaches in Canada that centre Indigenous rights, jurisdiction and knowledge systems, support the establishment of Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs), and Indigenous-led nature-based solutions, such as Guardians programs and stewardship initiatives. This will be achieved through strong, collaborative partnerships with Indigenous leaders and organizations that are rooted in reciprocity. It is through these relationships, and by invitation, that the Hub will amplify Indigenous voices and support the critical work of Indigenous Peoples on the ground.
We collaborate with and engage in respectful dialogue with the Indigenous Leadership Initiative, First 30×30, the RAD Network, Coast Funds, Wahkohtowin Development GP Inc., IISAAK Olam Foundation, and NationsFirst Technologies. A recent example is our webinar with First 30×30 on Scaling Investment in Indigenous-led Conservation.
